#COMMUNISM #KAZANTZAKIS #HITLER ! WHEN THE COMMUNISTS ACCUSED KAZANTZAKIS OF BEING A #HITLER_ADMIRER!
In 1936, the well-known Greek intellectual Nikolaos Kazantzakis, who probably belonged in some way to the left (though he was never a communist nor did he ever declare himself one!), refuses to sign a statement condemning the Italian invasion of Abyssinia and denounces the hypocrisy of the “humanitarians” (humanitarians by choice, depending on their political interests at the time...), by publishing an article in the newspaper “Kathimerini,” from which the following is excerpted:
Nikos Kazantzakis – Fear and Hunger:
“(...) Thinking in shades of gray is considered a mortal sin by both camps—the right and the left—which make up the monolithic, simplistic, and hostile mass of the “thinking mob.” For them, “yes” or “no” are the only two permissible answers. Black or white. Between these two extreme limits, which must be upheld only by those who are actively engaged in the struggle, there is no room for any nuance, nor for any compromise on the part of the independent, thinking individual” (...) “Among the great nations today, Germany, Japan, and Italy are suffocating within their borders; they have nowhere to expand; they are starving; while France and England are satiated; they have divided up the world among themselves and look with fear upon the landless and starving peoples.
How can an impartial mind, which refuses to be clouded by either love or hate, can confront the actions of these two groups?
A few months ago, our “intellectuals” staged an indignant yet painless protest against Italy, which had set out to devour Abyssinia. Someone asked me if I would sign it.
“Certainly,” I replied, “I sympathize with Abyssinia as it defends its freedom, but at the same time I also recognize Italy’s right to live, not to be suffocated within the narrow borders that cannot contain it. All the people who created the great civilizations followed the same insatiable, inhuman, dark instincts: in their early physical development, they wronged, plundered, and devoured; and as soon as their bodies were strengthened and hunger subsided, they began to create. Italy is doing the same thing today, following the same inhumane laws. “The spirit is the most flesh-devouring bird.” (“I Kathimerini,” July 20, 1936).
Well-known leftists responded angrily to this letter from Nikolaos Kazantzakis, including his ex-wife Galatea, who had since married the communist Markos Avgeris. They responded by denouncing him as an admirer of Hitler and Mussolini. This is because, quite simply, Kazantzakis dared to say—ignoring all propaganda— what naturally follows from the study of history, namely “the spirit is the most flesh-devouring bird” and that all great civilizations were forged through bloody struggles and wars.
